Hanger-Type Shot Blasting Machine Guide: Hook Load, Turbine Power and Selection

How a hanger shot blasting machine works, how to size hook load and turbine power, how it differs from tumble and pass-through blasters, and what to check on a used machine.

A hanger-type shot blasting machine hangs castings on a hook and rotates them inside a closed cabin while steel shot cleans them. It removes burnt sand, oxide scale and flash. It is the right choice for large, heavy or fragile castings that would be damaged by tumbling against each other.

How it works

The part is hung on the hook and moves along a rail into the cabin. The door closes and the hook starts rotating. Turbines in the cabin walls throw steel shot at high speed. The shot falls, is carried up by screw conveyor and elevator, cleaned of sand and dust in the separator and returned to the turbines. Dust is drawn to the filter.

Single hook, Y-track, twin hook

  • Single hook: load, blast, unload. Simple and cheap, for low volumes.
  • Y-track twin hook: two hooks alternate; one is blasted while the other is loaded. Waiting time almost disappears. The most common layout in mid-size and large foundries.
  • Continuous overhead (monorail): hooks pass through the cabin on a chain. For series production.

Hook load and turbine power

Hook load is the heaviest load the hook can carry, typically 200 kg to 5,000 kg. Size it on the total load you hang at once, not on a single part.

Turbine count and power decide cycle time. Machines in the 500–1,500 kg class typically have 2–4 turbines of 7.5–15 kW each. Fewer turbines mean longer cycles.

Choose cabin size by the diameter and height of your largest part, leaving clearance to the walls.

Hanger vs tumble vs pass-through

  • Hanger: Large, heavy, complex, fragile. Parts do not hit each other
  • Tumble / apron belt: Small, robust, bulk-loaded. High volume, low labour
  • Roller pass-through: Long, flat, profiles and plate. Continuous feed

Many foundries run two types: small parts in a tumble blaster, large ones on hangers.

Shot and wear

Foundries mostly use steel shot (S230–S390 is common). The cabin is lined with manganese steel or rubber. Turbine blades, liner plates and filter bags are regular wear parts, so check spare parts availability before buying.

Buying a used hanger blaster

  1. Nameplate: maker, year, hook load, total power.
  2. Condition of turbines and blades, motors running on video.
  3. Holes and wear in the cabin lining.
  4. Elevator, screw conveyor and separator in working order.
  5. Is the dust filter included, and what state are the bags in?
  6. Complete rail and hook system.
  7. Labelling of rail, filter and ducts during dismantling.

Currently offered: PMS (Poslu Makina) hanger shot blasting machine, 1,500 kg hook load, 32 kW, Y-track twin hook, dust filter included, 2018: ZEN-1998. For other blasting machines, see the "Shot blasting & cleaning" group on our Used Machinery page.

FAQ

How long is one hanger blasting cycle?

Usually 3–10 minutes depending on the part and turbine power.

Hanger or tumble blaster?

Hanger if your parts get damaged by contact or a single part is over 50–100 kg. Tumble for small, robust parts.

Is a dust filter required?

Yes. For worker safety and emissions, the filter is part of the machine, not an extra.
